Hello,

I've a EZB CD working quite fine with Acronis True Image and Disk Director Suite.

I'd like to add a brilliant tool for HDD checking which is < Hitachi Drive Fitness Test >.

I tried many options, but I fail each time I try to run from EZB.

More over, it is possible to have this tool for a floppy, or even for a CD (.iso file).  See download page of Hitachi's site.

Does someone know who to do to make it run from my EZB menu ?

Thanks to all,

All you have to do is to download the Floppy image from the Hitachi Website:

Put this file in your disk1\ezboot folder and use the run command to launch...

Hello Hulk :)

I've downloaded the binary diskette image (non-Windows systems) called dft32_v402_b00_install.img.

I put it in disk1\ezboot folder and used the command run dft32_v402_b00_install.img.

But when I launch it after booting with EasyBoot,  I have a "Non system disk or disk error" message.

Should't I change something with .img file before ?
What should I use to open it ?

You should change the name to something shorter without any underscore like: HITACHI.IMG

It's the same... :(

Does it have something to do with the .img extension ?

Hello Limerick

Download disk creator: ”Download Windows diskette creator” from Hitachi website.

Create floppy using downloaded exe.
When done, start EasyBoot and use: > Tools > ”Make floppy image” to create bootable image file.
Note: in “Output file name” change name from “boot.img” to “hitachi.img” (no quotes).
When done, check that you have a new image file “hitachi.img” in EasyBoot\disk1\ezboot

Use:  run hitachi.img as  command in EasyBoot

Note: when using “disk fitness test” this way (from image and not from floppy), you have to select abort one time during this test. No problem. It’s normal procedure.

Hello eureka,

I did what you said once again (I already done that yesterday), but I fail again.
Always this "Non system disk or disk error" message.

It was like the computer was enable to read this .img file.

Hello Limerick

Seems that your version of EasyBoot doesn’t respond according to img files.
Please tell me following.

In what way do you start other types of img files? (If using other img files)

I don't use any software to start .img files.

I was just wondering if "Daemon tool's" was able to do so... and it's not. ???

Hello Limerick

Well that explains your problems with:  fitness test img file.

Your problems would be easily fixed if using EasyBoot (witch is an excellent bootmanager).

 I may have not really understand your answer :D

In fact, I wish I could use EasyBoot (witch is an excellent bootmanager) to do what ever I want with .img files, but it doesn't want to.

I put the hitachi.img made from the floppy with the EazyBoot tool in disk1\ezboot, I write the command run hitachi.img in the menu, but when I want to launch it after the boot, I have the "non system disk" message.

What else to do ?

I should be able to right-click on .img files and choose open with EasyBoot ?
But what should happen ?

Hello Limerick

Oh.. I may have missed something. I quote: “I was just wondering if "Daemon tool's" was able to do so” Thought you tried to start fitness test img file, with help of "Daemon tool's".

However…
What other types of img files do you start without problems? (If using other img or ima files)

I mean, if you can start other types of img (or ima) files without problems, well if this is the case, there still must some problem with this “fitness disk.img “ file. Wouldn’t you agree?

Or you may not succeed to launch any img file at present time. If this is the case, you probably must do something wrong in building the menu in EasyBoot.

Note: You can only use maximum 8 letters names on files in EasyBoot.

Finally I quote: “I should be able to right-click on .img files and choose open with EasyBoot ?”
You can not use EasyBoot in this way (opening img files bye right-click on them).

Hello eureka,

I don't use any .img file. Neither I use any software to open it.

To tell truth, the file name I try to put in is dftv402.img instead of hitachi.img, as you advised me.

What I could say is the file is in the folder, it is seen by EasyBoot, but does not correspond to what EazyBoot is waiting for... ???
Posted by eureka on Apr. 08 2005,17:25
Hello Limerick

dftv402.img is not working. It has wrong size. The final size of img file(s) must be: 1,40 MB (1 474 560 byte) and nothing else. (dftv402.img is only 108 kB).

You have to do it this way: ”Download Windows diskette creator” from Hitachi website.

Create floppy using downloaded exe.
When done, start EasyBoot and use: > Tools > ”Make floppy image” to create bootable image file.
Note: in “Output file name” change name from “boot.img” to “hitachi.img” (no quotes).
Finally, check that you have a new image file “hitachi.img” in EasyBoot\disk1\ezboot

Use:  run hitachi.img as  command in EasyBoot

Try this and I think you have solved this problem.

Hello eureka,

No, no, my dftv402.img file is really 1,40Mb sized.
It's just the name I gave to it instead of boot.img (as it is made by EasyBoot's tool) or hitachi.img (as you told me before).

I'd just chosen this name cuz it means drive fitness test version 4.02. It just a name to remember what it is in case of, in few months...

As I told you before, I've already done the bootable image file made with floppy. I just changed the name.
And all the following was exactly as your advice.

But : "Non system disk or disk error" when EZB tries to launch the dftv402.img run command... :(

Hello Limerick, and a god morning from eureka…

Can’t figure out what kind of problems this is. However, test with another img file.
Use “setup98.img” and se if this one works (setup98.img comes with Easy Boot).

1. If setup98.img doesn’t works, well then you have to look over how you use “menu” in EasyBoot.
2. If setup98.img works, well then there must be some problem with “fitness test img file” itself.
3. Finally, reinstall EasyBoot (could be some problem there, you never now).

This is the only suggestion I can find out about this “mysterious” problem of yours.

(Sorry for my misunderstanding about names and files. Got your message…)

Hello eureka :D

I tried with setup98.img and... no problem :O
I have the boot menu of Win98.

So the problem comes from the dftv402.img file.

Did you try to create an EZB menu with this Drive Fitness Tool ?

Hello Limerick

Good news. Now we now for sure what the problem seems to be.
I suggest you download “Ultimate Boot CD” (zipped version) from here: < http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html > (hope you have broadband of some kind).

You need program(s) to open iso files and igz files. I recommend winrar for this purpose.

Unzip and then open downloaded ubcd.iso. Continue with open folder “Images”, scroll down to find “ibmfts.igz”, finally open ibmfts.igz and extract ibmft.img to EasyBoot\disk1\ezboot

Now you have a well working image according to hard disk fitness test (originally this is a well known IBM tool, however Hitachi now days own IBM hard disk plants).

There is a benefit with using this image you don’t need to choose “Abort” (as I earlier mentioned) when fitness test starts up.

You may change name from ibmfts.img to hitachi.img if you find this more convenient.
As usual in EasyBoot: run ibmfts.img (or  run hitachi.img).

To Limerick

Just tested my own suggestion. And… to many promises from me. “There is a benefit with using this image you don’t need to choose “Abort” (as I earlier mentioned) when fitness test starts up”.

Sorry, you still have to select abort when loading image.

No big deal…

Hello eureka,

I found the problem !!! "EUREKA"

It doesn't belong to DFT, EasyBoot or UBCD.
It belongs to the computer's Bios.

I was performing all tests on a brand new Dell Laptop 510m which has no floppy driver and on which floppy might be disable (I don't have this laptop any more because it was for my father, who is gone yesterday).

So I tried on my desktop computer which has a floppy driver... and no problem, DFT runs smoothly.

Then, I found that < here >

Quote

Question:  I was getting a bunch of "non-system disk or disk error" messages when I was trying to boot certain DOS floppy images. What's wrong?

For certain machines, you need to enable the floppy drive in the BIOS for memdisk to work properly. For these machines, if you set the floppy drive in the BIOS to "None", you will get the above error message.

I hope I could try on the Laptop Dell after enable floppy driver, in a while... when my father will come back.

So, thank you very very much for your kind help and patience.

By the way, what I wanted to do was to create my own Ultimate Boot CD... which already exists... I'l burn it also :;):

Best wishes, :)

Hello Limerick

Thanks for nice feedback!

As I wrote: “This was a “mysterious” problem of yours”.

I thought you used virtuell PC software of some kind (witch include support for floppy)? I never considered that you used “hardware” stuff when testing (big mistake from me).

However, you solved the problem your self (congratulations and well done!).

Keep up the good work…

Regards eureka
