I've already make a Easyboot CD which consist of some ISO files and and img/ima files in it. Even some are copying files to "C:\EasyBoot\disk1" and use run xxx.bif way.

1. I've try "EasyBoot-USB" in balder's WinBuilder_Complete to test an img file. When I boot up that USB stick , sometimes it boots normal with a Linux logo , but many times it boots up with a Windows 7 safe mode screen. Very strange !! Why ?

2. When I boot my USB-stick it only has a few succeed and many times fail with error message like this :

Try (hd0,0): FAT32: No GRLDR
Try (hd0,1): invalid or null
Try (hd0,2): invalid or null
Try (hd0,3): invalid or null
Try (hd1,0): NTFS5: No grldr
Try (hd1,1): FAT32: No GRLDR
Try (hd1,2): NTFS5: No grldr
Try (hd1,3): Extended :
...
...
...
...
Cannot find GRLDR.
Press space bar to hold the screen, any other key to boot previous MBR .....
Timeout : 0
Disk error
Press any key to restart

If it is really disk error. why can I have 20% chance to boot it normal. Firstly I think it may be my USB port fail. But after I change my USB stick to any other USB port. It has the same problem ; no matter it is the FRONT or BACK USB  port.

Please help, thanks in advance.

Quote: ”Cannot find GRLDR”

I guess we are dealing with USB stick/thumb drive. Correct?
This “(hd0,0)” is you first bootable disk unit BIOS can find. BIOS find an MBR-code but MBR-code cannot find files on your USB drives file system (FAT32). This problem can be caused by many different reasons ???

1. USB drive not in good condition (yes even a brand new one can fail)
2. Your motherboard USB-chipset doesn’t work properly
3. Power supply isn’t giving the right voltage to motherboard USB-connectors
4. And more… :O

I think this is a hardware problem more than a software problem
Test this:
1. You don’t  - by any chance - own a second USB stick to test with?
2. You can – if possible – test on some other computer (but I guess you already done that)
3. If you are using an USB stick/thumb drive, you can try checking: “Repair boot-record during process” (do not use this to USB harddisk units).
4. Seems that you run script in Windows-7? Correct? If so test – if possible – to run scripts in WinXP

Post back you results :)

Regards balder

Hello balder

1. I'm sure whether my USB drive is a good one, but I've make a lot of bootable wares with this USB drive.

2. I'm using Asus M2N68-AM motherboard, this is my testing computer (very important) to test all XP, Vista, Windows 7.......... setup, preinstall windows, make winpe , bartpe ....... It is a perfect one. And I'm sure all the USB port are in good condition ; as I always plug my 2.5" harddisk and they never fail me.

3. As I've mention before , this is my test computer to test everything. So the power supply is 600w for only one harddisk and one DVDRW and nothing more. As I won't allow this computer to fail me.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
1. Yes, you are right. I don't have another USB stick as I seldom use them.

2. Yes, I've really test this USB stick in more that 6 computers in my shop. And it has the same problem

3. I don't quite understand what do you mean “Repair boot-record during process” , how can I do it please.

4. I always run Easyboot test in XP, as I've seen a lot of your comments in this forum.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually I won't use USB stick to boot and run the programs. I will run all program with my 2.5" harddisk ; like I've done before. All I want to do is to make a perfect USB stick with multi-boot programs. Then make it with an backup ".gho" (Ghost) or ".tib" (Acronis) files and restore to my primary partition of 2.5" harddisk.

As you know, I can't let the Winbuilder-iso-script to format my 2.5" harddisk everything when I add a ISO or floppy image in it.

I'm going to restore USB stick ".gho" or ".tib" to my 2.5" harddisk. And see how it perform. Thanks for your answer balder. Of course I'll let you know my test result with my 2.5" harddisk. Thanks a lot.

If you take a closer look into script easyboot-usb.script you find a checkbox “Repair boot-record during process”. Check that box and test again. If checked, MBR-code (MBR=Master-Boot-Record) on USB stick is automatically refreshed during process. This can help

Note: I use easyboot-usb.script to my “old” 3,5"-harddisk-units (old 10GB, 20GB etcetera) using this adapter HERE and it works well. I then make a ghost image of this and ghost my USB sticks with this image – works perfect as I can work much faster using this adapter and a “real” harddisk (USB sticks is much slower).

Quote: "supply is 600w".  Yes but it doesn’t tell us what voltage and current it puts to your USB stick

hello balder

I tried to use my 2.5" harddisk to boot. It seem to be good at the beginning. But fail after 4 times cold boot (Ctrl-Alt-Del) test. Then afterwards ... all fail

I tried you suggestion “Repair boot-record during process” , even it never succeed, even worse.

I believe of course, you can make it success with your old harddisk. As the other members in this forum didn't never raise this problem. But I myself is the first time fail in this Easyboot process. When it boot ok, I'm very happy to see the Linux penguin. But when I fail to boot, retry and retry and fail , I feel very unhappy.

As I know Easyboot is the only program that I can built my multi-boot easily and successfully. I can built my own multi-boot CD , I then know how to multi-boot in USB stick, but only it's always boot fail, it really make me sad.

balder, I know you did a great help to me. I appreciate that. Thanks, you've told me the way to solve my problem, but I still fail. It seems there's nothing more I can do with me, right ?

hello balder

There's one more thing I want to talk about.

Before Easyboot, my 320GB 2.5" harddisk is divided into 4 portions ... 3 primary and 1 extend.

1st partition ... Dos boot with some Dos tools , then call Linux boot with RXPE and Easeus Partition Manager 3.0

2nd partition ... Acronis only

3rd partition ... Windows Vista setup disk

Logical partition ... for most of my datas

I use SPFDISK to make the 3 primary partitions a multi-boot menu. It never fails me ; not even once. And I've been using it for a year. Until now I find that Easyboot is a much much better one , that I can insert much more programs in only one partition. I like it.

I use the same computer, same 2.5" harddisk, same Imation 4GB USB stick. I really don't know why I'm fail. And now I'm eagering for your help. As you are the only one who can help me.

Sorry about my English, as I'm not so good all along. Thanks

@allgames71

Please do this test to see if you "get happy" :)

You can make USB stick DOS-bootable using HP tools.
Download HERE (Hpusbfw.exe)

Now download dos-grub-files from HERE

Extract zip-file (you get a folder grub)

Start HP-format tool and choose “Create a DOS startup disk” and do not check “Quick format” – we must do full format to USB stick.
Point (scroll) in HP format tool to your extracted dos-grub-files (folder grub) and now run HP format tool.

When finished you have 3 files on USB stick: Command.com, Io.sys and Msdos.sys (note: this files are hided as this is system-files).
Copy the rest of visible dos-grub-files from folder grub to USB stick.

Test USB stick if it boots correct this time
Note: This is only to make sure USB stick boots correctly every time you test.
From this point, we can move forward when you are finished with your tests :)
On the other hand - if USB stick continue having problem with boot correctly - then it is the USB stick that is the problem. Interesting how this ends up

Forgot to mention that you in easyboot-usb-ghost.script have option to fix bootability to USB sticks/thumb drives. Choose “Repair MBR BOOT”. This is a very reliable way to make sure USB stick is bootable.
Please read how script is used (and it’s limits). Read help file as well (push help button in script)
In fact, I used  “Repair MBR BOOT” to my USB hard disk-unit and success - works fine. Note: This should work just fine to your 4GB USB stick – that is what it’s supposed to be used to :)

regards balder

Hello balder

Thanks for you suggestions of 2 kinds. I've test them all. Unfortunately it makes no different.

I finally regard it may be the computer bios problem. So today I upgrade all the computers in my shop and test my USB stick again. Now most of the computers can successfully boot up Easyboot menu. It really fine. Only one computer happen as before. So I think BIOS must be upgrade if boot problem exist. At least it has better improvement. As the one computer that sometimes file to boot Easyboot .... is more success , less fail. Before upgrade bios , it's always fail with only few success.

balder , thanks for all your concern about my problem. I think it's time to end up this topic.

By the way I'll have a new topic to come and hope you will help me. Thanks in advance.
